5 Tips for Decorating a Dresser Top

“A key factor in creating a peaceful master bedroom

is decorating your dresser. Even if the drawers are full of neatly folded clothes, it seems like dresser tops are too often cascading with clutter or completely bare.

Our first instinct may be to cover flat surfaces with items that are pretty or special to us, but beauty must be balanced by function. The first time you discover how romantic your bedroom becomes when softly lit by lamps (instead of glaring overhead light), you’ll be a believer. Bonus: These ideas can also be used to style an entryway table, console table, or even a mantel!

Tips

  1. Center a framed piece of artwork or a mirror at eye-level above your dresser.

  2. Flank either end of your dresser with a pair of matching lamps.

  3. Provide attractive storage, such as decorative boxes, trays, or bowls, to hold jewelry or odds and ends.

  4. Layer in interesting objects—such as a clock, candle holder, or collectible.

  5. Finish with something beautiful. You can’t go wrong with fresh or silk flowers!

FALSE:Teens who fall asleep in class have bad habits and/or are lazy.

According to sleep experts, teens need at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night, compared to an average of seven to nine hours each night for most adults. Their internal biological clocks also keep them awake later in the evening and keep them sleeping later in the morning. However, many schools begin classes early in the morning, when a teenager’s body wants to be asleep. As a result, many teens come to school too sleepy to learn, through no fault of their own.

Bedroom Cleaning Check List

Bed sheets

Clean: Once a week

According to a recent YouGov poll, one in ten of us wash our sheets only every four weeks, and more than a third wait 14 days. Laura recommends washing them once a week at a minimum of 60 degrees to destroy bacteria. ‘Dry sheets and pillowcases in direct sunlight if you can, as UV light is effective in killing micro-organisms. Run a hot iron over pillowcases on the cotton setting (200 degrees) to kill any leftover bacteria.’

Pillows

Clean: Every three months

This is where it gets really disgusting. According to Mail Online, doctors have found that up to a third of a pillow’s weight can be made up of bugs, dead skin, mites and their faeces, and the average unwashed pillow can contain a revolting 16 species of fungi. Luckily, washing at 60 degrees hould kill most bacteria so chuck them in the washing machine once every three months.

Beds

Clean: Every six months

Laura recommends that you hoover or steam your mattress once every six months, as dust mite faeces in your mattress cause allergies and asthma, and fungi and mould spores can lead to serious allergic reactions. It’s also worth investing in a machine-washable mattress topper, to make life a little easier (which we’re always a fan of!).”

12 Newbie Decorating Moves

  • Hanging your artwork too high.

Art should always be hung at eye level. A rookie move would be to hang a painting close to your console table or up higher near the ceiling. If you’re super tall or vertically challenged, hanging art at your own eye level will probably look odd to most of your guests; consider having a friend come over to help you eyeball it and find a happy medium.

  • Hanging your light fixtures too low

As I mentioned earlier, hanging a light fixture too low is a major rookie move (one that I’m guilty of—remind me not to ask my shortest friend for installation help). I love a low-hanging chandelier or pendant; it feels a little sultry. That said, it’s only acceptable if it’s hanging over a table (e.g., a dining table or a nightstand); otherwise you and your guests will bump into it—and that can hurt!

  • Painting Without a Plan

If you have the opportunity, you should definitely paint first, before you install carpet and lighting and other tricky elements of a room. That said, if you plan to do real decorating, you should always have a plan before you choose your paints. If you think you’ll be reupholstering seating, purchasing colored furniture, buying textiles, wallpapering, or remodeling in any way, your paint color should be your last choice. It’s so much easier to match a paint to a fabric or the marble on your new counters than to find a slab that complements a random paint swatch you’ve chosen on a whim.

  • Floating Your Rugs

A rug that’s floating in the middle of a room on its own pretty much always looks like a bath mat—even if it’s gorgeous and you dropped major bucks on it at the bazaar in Marrakech. Designers generally advise to ground it by tucking it under furniture, or the front legs of your furniture. If it’s not big enough to do so, try layering it over another rug (a nondescript natural fiber, for instance) or placing it as close as possible to nearby furniture.

  • Not Trying Before Buying

I laughed hard—and also nearly injured myself—when I sat down on a bachelor friend’s dining chair recently: I immediately sank inches down. Not only had he purchased cheesy faux-leather chairs that had “bachelor pad” written all over them, but they also had zero support; I couldn’t imagine trying to sit through a dinner party in them. Not trying out your furniture—be it dining chairs, a sofa, or a mattress—before you buy is definitely a rookie move.

  • Not Measuring

No one expects a home decorator to be as thorough with planning as an interior designer who’s using AutoCAD, but at the very least you should take some simple measurements. Hanging a few art pieces on one wall? Make sure they are evenly spaced. Having a new sofa delivered? Make sure your delivery men can get it in the door. Take special care when making online orders, and test out the measurements before you fork over your credit card.

  • Buying Curtains That Are Too Short

Many designers advise to go as high as you possibly can when it comes to installing your curtain rod (to give the illusion your ceilings are taller), but that choice is subjective. The length of your drapes, however, is one thing most designers agree on: They should “kiss” the floor. A rookie move would be to have them hit the window ledge or fall somewhere between the bottom of the window and the base of the floor. If you want to get super romantic with silk curtains, you can go for a glamorous “puddling” of extra fabric, but otherwise they should just meet the floor.

  • Buying Furniture in Sets

Buying furniture in sets might be the most rookie move of all. If anything about your home brings to mind Rooms to Go, you should start questioning everything. It’s okay to have, say, matching nightstands or a pair of matching chairs, but don’t even think about buying a bed, dresser, and nightstand set or a sofa and two matching armchairs. Introducing a little variety adds depth and keeps your home from looking like a showroom.

  • Using a Single Design Style

Just like you should have a mix of furniture pieces in your home, you should also have a mix of design eras and styles. Pair a modernist ’50s French wall sconce with a Downton Abbey–era sofa and a Chinoiserie-inspired wallpaper. Mix it up. Using furniture and accessories from only one era will make your home feel like a TV set.

  • Over-Accessorizing

We love accessories, but one of the greatest skills in design is editing. Even if you have the most beautiful pieces on the planet, putting them all out on display at once will instantly make your space feel cluttered and kooky. Instead, be thoughtful about which accents of yours complement each other, and be selective; if you need a guide, try not to have more than three to five items in one vignette.

  • Not Considering Traffic Flow

  • Omitting Art

It makes me think you haven’t moved in yet if there’s no art in a room. Total rookie move! If there’s nothing on your walls, put something there! It doesn’t have to be expensive, but hang a painting or a photograph—or get playful with wall art, like a vintage sign.

Football Season Has Arrived!

Football season has arrived, let the games begin! For the next four months my home will be inundated with sights and sounds of football whistles, crashing helmets, and of course football paraphernalia.

As a coach’s wife, I’m convinced that I receive more than my fair share. From jerseys to trophies and plaques there is hardly any room to display it all without someone mistaking our home for a sports hall of fame.

Resisting the temptation to store everything in a cardboard box, I’ve had to find creative ways to show my support. Many of you Houzz readers have found solutions to this decorating dilemma and provided some great ways to support the home team. There’s nothing like teamwork!

If you have the luxury of space, create a comfortable den to stretch out and watch the game. Decorate surrounding walls and shelves with collectibles from your family’s favorite teams.

Is there an older gamer in your midst? Use antique trophies as flower vases. How’s that for a balance of masculine and feminine?

No matter the sport, little helmets add big style. Integrate your child’s sporting equipment into his room’s decor and maybe less of it will end up on the floor. You know the saying, “”If you can’t beat them, join them.””

Have your treasured sports collectibles framed and hung gallery-style. The archived pieces make a proud display and are preserved for many generations to come.

For a less expensive option, frame a jersey yourself using a frame from a mass retailer. This gives you the flexibility to switch from football to basketball immediately after the Super Bowl.

Show support for your budding athlete in a big way. Paint a wall with chalkboard paint (it now comes in colors!) and help them to map out their winning strategy.

Tiny tokens of appreciation are the easiest to blend into your decor. This silver helmet is a lovely accent among a pair of floating shelves. Need a change? Use this statuette as a paperweight or a bookend.

This may be the best example of compromise I’ve ever seen. A formal room instantly becomes a overflow space to watch the big game. Unsuspecting guests receive a pleasant surprise when a full-sized television lowers from the ceiling and retracts when the party is over.

"Confirmed:The Reason Why Your Eyes Move When You Sleep "

“When you dream, your eyes flutter quickly from side to side, which is exactly why this phase is known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. It’s long been suggested that the eye movements might correlate with people seeing things in their dreams as they “look around.” Yet even fetuses and people who have been blind since birth experience REM, despite the fact that they’ve never experienced sight.

New research building on this shows that during REM sleep, the pattern of signaling in the brain is similar to that when we see, or imagine, a new image. The researchers from Tel Aviv University found that there was a burst in the activity of neurons that occurred just after the person’s eyes flickered. This activity reflected a change of concept or scene (not image processing) during sleep. The scientists demonstrated that this was the same brain activity that occurred when awake patients were shown pictures, especially those related to memory.

“About a 0.3 seconds after the picture appears, these neurons burst – they become vigorously active,” Dr. Yuval Nir, who co-authored the study published in Nature Communications, explained to BBC News. “This also happens when people just close their eyes and imagine these pictures, or these concepts.”

This is important because it could go some way to explain why blind people still undergo REM sleep. The eye movement might not mean that someone is actually scanning a dream’s environment, but more moving onto the next scene or concept. For example, a blind person will perceive a scene through sound and emotions, and these will obviously vary from one to the other. So when scenes change in a dream, their eyes will flicker in the same way that happens with people who can see.

The research was conducted over a period of four years, using data collected from those who suffer from epilepsy. The patients already had electrodes implanted in their brains to try and help manage their seizures, and this allowed Dr. Nir the perfect chance to measure the activity of around 40 individual neurons – mainly within the medial temporal lobe located towards the bottom of the brain – while the volunteers slept.

It’s difficult to know what the patients were actually dreaming about, and how the neuronal activity related to what they were “”seeing,”” as they didn’t wake them up to ask what they were dreaming about. “But we are sure that the brain is alternating between different mental imagery,” Dr. Nir told New Scientist. “Every time you move your eyes, a new image forms in the mind’s eye.””

Moving Furniture Safely

“Whether you’re moving apartments or you’re simply revamping your living areas, moving heavy furniture can be an extremely daunting task. When you move furniture and you don’t know what you are doing, you risk causing damage to floors, walls, and yourself.

After talking to some of the top moving companies, we’ve compiled these tips for how to move heavy furniture in your home.

Prepare in advance

One of the biggest causes of damage to a home during a move is rushing the job. There’s nothing more dangerous than having to kick stuff out of the way while trying to balance half of the couch or coffee table.

  • Plan your route out and make a clear path before you start moving anything. Make sure that all mats, rugs, and general debris are cleared away before you start moving.

  • If your route passes through any doorways or hallways, it’s important to measure them beforehand to make sure the furniture you’re carrying will fit through.

Handle furniture like a professional

People say imitation is the biggest form of flattery. We say imitation is the best way to keep yourself safe. If you’ve ever seen the way a mover handles furniture, you wouldn’t think it was hard at all. That’s because they know exactly what to do. Consider using the followings tricks.

  • When you move a heavy piece of furniture, keep your body pressed against it. This reduces the strain on your arms and makes it easier to balance. It also helps you maintain a firm grip, so you’re less likely to drop what you’re carrying.

  • Lift with your legs. If you lift with your back, you won’t get much leverage, and you may even injure yourself. Lifting with your legs protects your back and gives you better leverage to lift

  • Utilize moving equipment. As with any job, having the right equipment makes can make the world of difference. When you are moving heavy items, it is much easier and much safer when know what tools you can use. Using dollies and carts to push heavy furniture around is much easier than carrying it, even over relatively short distances. You can also use moving straps to help you lift and maneuver heavy objects. Slipping the moving strap underneath a heavy object allows you to apply lifting force from the bottom of the object, or exert a tipping force to rotate the object.

  • Make sure that there are enough people available to move particularly heavy and awkward items.

Cover walls and flooring

Protecting your home’s flooring and walls is important because they can be difficult and costly to repair. Avoid the headache of having to repair these items later by doing the following.

  • Take extra time when you’re carrying large items through doorways.

  • Use a protective cover to protect hardwood floors from dents, scratches, and gouges. And if you plan on moving furniture around, make sure you attach felt or cardboard to the feet, as this will prevent scratching.

  • The walls of narrow rooms and hallways are especially susceptible to damage, so consider hanging drop cloths on these walls. You can also protect them with thick cardboard and bubble wrap.

Spice Up The Dining Room

“The same old, same old might not cut it in your kitchen. If you’re one tempted to try new recipes and stretch your culinary horizons, you might want to spice up your presentation, as well. Whether you have a formal dining room or an eat-in kitchen, seating arrangements aren’t what they used to be. Feast your eyes on some of the hottest trends.

Among the ways you can mix it up to match your taste:

#1: Light and dark meet.

When furnishings have rich variations in color (highly distressed wood finishes, for example), they also have the potential to be great mixers since they “talk” to each so easily. Feel free to have a darker finished table with much lighter finished chairs (or vice versa). Together they serve up a whole lot of style.

#2: Striking contrasts.

Bring even more flavor to the table with a mix of seating colors and styles. Maybe even incorporate upholstered seating at the head of the table for more indulgence. To keep the look from getting too busy, you might limit the seating to two color schemes.

#3: Sidelined on the bench.

Why settle exclusively for standard side chairs? Create a beautifully balanced, less formal look by bringing a bench to one side of the table. Upholstered benches make it a lot more comfortable to linger over a meal. Come Sunday family dinners and holiday gatherings, you’ll appreciate that benches make it easy to slide in that extra guest.

#4: Changing times.

Styles from different eras can commingle beautifully at the table. As this example shows, classic Windsor chairs are paired with a mid-century-inspired kitchenette table. The fact that the spindle backs and legs are crafted of metal instead of wood makes for a unique and timely twist.”

Leather vs. Microfiber Sofas

“Before purchasing your next sofa, you will probably ask yourself, “Should I buy a leather or microfiber sofa?” When you ask yourself this question, you need to take cost, comfort and durability into consideration. These factors will ultimately help you make your final decision.

Cost: Leather vs. Microfiber Sofas

As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to pay more for leather than microfiber sofas. Leather has such varying grades that pricing can fluctuate greatly. We won’t discuss leather in detail here but remember that bonded leather, leather match, top grain leather and top grain Italian leather will play a big role in the cost. Depending on the manufacturer and quality of materials, leather and microfiber sofas can be comparable in price. For example, you can find some manufacturers that can provide both microfiber sectional sofas and leather sectional sofas for about the same price. Let’s look at Coaster for instance. They have a leather modular sectional sofa and microfiber sectional sofa for about the same price. Of course, leather sofas can get quite costly if you are looking for a sectional sofa made from top grain Italian leather. Moroni leather furniture will cost more because they have developed a great reputation with their plush and luxurious leather sofa designs. You are also paying for superior quality in how your sofa is made by purchasing from Moroni, as they hand produce and closely inspect every leather sofa they make. There is also a new phenomenon in microfiber sofas called “leather-like microfiber”. This is a full microfiber fabric but looks just like leather. Until you touch it, most people will never know that it isn’t leather. This is a great option if you are looking for a leather looking sofa but don’t want to pay the leather price.

Comfort: Leather vs. Microfiber Sofas

The comfort of leather and microfiber sofas come from the quality of materials used to produce the sofas. Bonded and faux leather sofas will typically not be as comfortable as top grain leather sofas. This is because top grain leather is softer and more flexible than the processed bonded leather. Comfort also comes down to a matter of personal preference. Some people do not prefer leather sofas for various reasons, so they might be more inclined to purchase a microfiber sofa. Microfiber sofas are great if you live in a climate that is very hot and humid as microfiber is known to wick away moisture. If you decide to purchase a microfiber sofa, you will have many options. Not all microfiber sofa fabrics are made equally and they come in all different textures. The texture of the microfiber comes from how the fibers are woven.

Durability: Leather vs. Microfiber Sofas

If you have dogs or kids, durability will most likely be the most important factor in purchasing a leather or microfiber sofa.  It has been said that the wear and tear from kids and pets can decrease the life of your sofa by half! Not to worry, by choosing the material that suites your needs you will still be able to get years of use out of your sofa. Again, as a general rule, if you know your sofa is going to be used heavily (i.e. your main room or TV watching room) you will want to make sure you choose a leather sofa. Leather is much more durable, can take much more abuse and still looks and functions great. If you are worried about spills, leather cleans extremely well and will continue to look great as you can just wipe spills away. Microfiber sofas are also great for spills but won’t clean as well as leather sofas. They are also more susceptible to staining. If you are worried about tears, a leather sofa will be your best option. Leather is stronger than microfiber and will resist tears and fraying much better. So if you have a pet with claws, we recommend leather over microfiber. If you are worried about scratch marks, we recommend microfiber sofas. Microfiber sofas won’t show the scratches the way leather will. However, if those furry critters have pokey nails, and you are worried about ripping or tearing, we recommend leather sofa as they are most durable over all. No shocking news here, but if you are planning on putting your sofas through heavy use, you will definitely want to purchase a dark color to hide soiling and staining that naturally takes place over time. If you do have pets and kids, your furniture will receive heavy use.

How to Fix an Uneven Table

An uneven table that wobbles on its legs goes beyond being annoying. Any items placed on top may fall off or tip over when the table starts doing its dance. Virtually any do-it-yourself person can choose from a variety of fixes, depending on the size and type of table, and make the legs even again.

Determine if the Table Is Uneven

In some cases, the floor that the table sits on may be the cause of an uneven table. Warped flooring or floors that have become separated from the joist beneath may bulge upward and cause an uneven spot. By moving the table a few inches to the left or the right, you might be able to even it out in this situation.

Use Cork or Rubber

A sheet of thin cork or rubber that is cut to the size and shape of the bottom of a table leg will level it off. Wobble the table to determine which leg is the shortest, cut a piece of cork or rubber that fits and glue it in place. Use the thinnest pieces possible so that you can stack pieces together if you need more.

Table Levelers

Table levelers come in all sizes and shapes. Some will fit inside of hollow metal legs, others are screwed into the bottom of wooden legs and still others attach to the side of a leg. Once in place, the foot is lowered or raised by turning it one way or the other. Except in cases where the table is grossly uneven, levelers must be added to all of the table legs to achieve a perfectly level table.

Trimming the Legs

Trim wooden legs with a table saw to level the out. A table saw adjusted to 1/16 inch or less will allow you to run the bottom of a longer table leg over the blade. The turning saw blade will grind off the bottom of the leg in 1/16-inch increments. After each pass over the blade, check to see that the table is level. If not, grind a bit more off the leg until the table sits flush on all of its legs.

How To Identify and Prevent Tip Overs

“They may not make the news very often, but tip-over injuries and deaths are fairly common. In fact, a November 2012 report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that from 2009 to 2011, an estimated average of 43,200 people were treated in hospital emergency departments each year for tip-over injuries relating to furniture, televisions, or appliances. Of these incidents, 25,400 or 59% involved children under 18. Needless to say, this type of accident is something that any parent should be aware of, and it makes sense to want to learn a bit more about how and why something like this might occur.

Facts about Tip-Over Deaths

Some important figures relating to tip-over incidents as per the CPSC report referenced above include:

  • From 2000 to 2011, there were 349 fatalities relating to product instability and tip-over incidents. Of these, 294 or 84% involved children ranging in age from one month to eight years old.

  • 69% of estimated emergency department-treated injuries and 77% of fatalities were sustained in residential settings.

  • The most common injuries sustained due to a tip-over incident were: contusions or abrasions (39%), injuries to internal organs (15%), lacerations (14%), and fractures (13%). • The most common pieces of furniture involved in product instability or tip-over injuries for kids under 18 were: tables (34%); chests, bureaus, and dressers (28%); and shelving, shelving units, and bookcases (19%).

  • 70% of children fatalities involved televisions or televisions and furniture tipping over together. 26% involved just furniture, and the remaining 4% involved appliances.

How to Avoid Tip-Over Accidents

Although it’s impossible for even the most vigilant parent to prevent every accident, there are a number of steps you can take to make your home a safer place and protect against tip-over incidents. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Anchor all appliances with L-brackets – Freestanding appliances like fridges and ovens can tip over if a child hangs on the door, but a small and inexpensive metal bracket can help prevent this by anchoring it down. These brackets sometimes come with the appliance, but if not, you can usually get one at any home improvement store.

  • Secure heavy furniture – Similarly to appliances, bulky and heavy pieces of furniture can fall over onto children, bringing everything on and in that furniture down with it. Many furniture manufacturers and resellers offer inexpensive anchors which can be connected to the furniture and anchored into the wall to prevent the piece from tipping over if it should be pulled upon. Someone at your local furniture or home improvement store should be able to show you how to install it.

  • Invest in a baby gate – If your children are still young enough for it to be effective, a baby gate can be invaluable in keeping kids away from dangerous areas like bedrooms and living rooms with heavy furniture. Choose a gate that installs with hardware rather than tension rods; it may be less portable, but it’s also more secure.

  • Always supervise – This should go without saying, but always watch your children when they’re in an area that contains the potential for a tip-over accident. Even if your own home has been fully baby-proofed, you’re bound to visit a friend or family member who may not have tied in their furniture or taken the same precautions, and you’ll want to make sure your kids don’t put themselves in any potentially

  • Teach children safe habits – Your watchful eyes won’t always be around to make sure your children are playing safely, so it’s

important to teach them not to climb or pull on dangerous items around the home.

These are just a few suggestions for helping your child avoid injury or worse due to falling furniture or appliances. When it comes down to it, the best weapon against such tragedy is often simple knowledge – the more aware you are of potential hazards, the easier it will be for you to take steps to mitigate risk, and in the end, that’s the best any parent can really do.

CONFIRMED: How Noise Affects Your Sleep read more

“Tomorrow is the Fourth of July. For some, that means barbecues and lots of red, white and blue, but the most common and well-known fourth tradition is, of course, fireworks. While many of us will watch these colorful pyrotechnics, we’ll eventually pass out from exhaustion. The problem is, others will continue to celebrate the nation into the wee hours of July 5th. Let’s go over how noise can affect your sleep and how to sleep through the Fourth’s festivities.

As you may know, noises are measured in decibels. When we’re sleeping, sounds at levels from 40 decibels to 70 decibels are the ones that keep us awake. Examples of noises at these decibels can range from a dripping faucet in your bathroom sink to a car stereo blaring outside your window. The interesting part about noise is that sometimes the absence of it can be just as distracting as the noise itself. If you’re used to sleeping above a busy city street, the quiet countryside can lead to a restless night of sleep.

To fall asleep easier in the noise (or lack of it), try to block sounds with earplugs or “white noises” like a fan or an air conditioner. Using an alarm clock that is equipped with sounds such as “sounds of the sea” can also help too.

In a recent report cited by Natural Home and Garden, it was discovered that continuous exposure to noise pollution is a stress inducer that can lead to high blood pressure and even heart disease. Some less-intense side effects that can result from constant noises is the disruption of sleep, which can lead to difficulties throughout the day such as lack of concentration, little patience and having a hard time problem solving.

A study by Harvard Medical School concluded that while background sounds may relax some people, the volume must be at a low level. If the volume’s at a high decibel, you will awake easier throughout the night and never reach your deeper stage of REM sleep.

Some other solutions for avoiding noise pollution outside the home are simple: start by getting rid of them inside the home. Work to control the noise sources in your home such as the TV, radio, computer, iPod dock, etc. Put a volume limit on these items. When buying new appliances, research ones that are known for being quiet and efficient. Filling your home with cushions and pillows can also help to absorb sounds, which for those of you with young children can truly be a blessing.

So this Fourth of July remember to have a blast watching the blasts, followed by a peaceful night of sleep! Happy birthday America!

6 Steps To Creating A Corner Reading Nook In The Living Room

If you have an oversized living room, you probably feel like you just have a lot of wasted space that is not being used to its full potential. It just makes sense to section off an area as a separate “”room.”” This allows the living room to feel a little cozier, and it gives you the opportunity to create that reading nook you have wanted for so long. This is a lot easier to pull off than you might think.

Pick a Corner – Picking a corner may be more challenging than you thought it would be. If you have a window near a corner it would certainly be nice to look outside and see the snow falling or the birds taking turns in the bird bath. However, if it is the living room’s only windows you probably don’t want it hidden from the rest of the room.

Isolate the Space – Room dividers make it very easy to essentially create a separate room from the main space. You can also suspend curtain rods from the ceiling and make or buy floor-to-ceiling curtains. You could even make them with different fabric on each side, so you can decorate your nook differently than the rest of the room.

Comfortable Seating – The seating you choose should be something you can get really cozy in. For a larger nook, a bean bag sofa sure would be nice. If you prefer to sit on or near the floor, Jaxx makes a few seating options you may be interested in, such as the Five Points Lounger, Futon Hippo, and Nest.

Corner Fireplaces – You will never want to leave your nook, if you have a fire to relax next to. As their name implies corner fireplaces simply nestle right into a corner. Some even let you turn the heat off, so you can enjoy the ambiance of a realistic flame year-round.

End Table – You definitely need a small table, so you have something to put your lamp and beverage on. If you get a floor lamp, you could consider a coffee table instead. It just depends on how much space you have. Of course, you could always go with a nightstand, so you have a drawer to hide your secret stash of snacks.

Small Fountain – If there are other people in the home who may want to watch the TV in the living room while you are using the nook, a small fountain you will come in handy. The sound of cascading water will help mask the noise from the TV.

How to Decorate a Small Spare Room

“What do you do with that small spare room, the one that’s not quite big enough to be a full-size bedroom? Often this room is used as a child’s room or a home office (often with an awkward furniture arrangement). Sometimes it becomes a dumping ground for extra stuff. Here, design professionals offer advice on getting the most from these tricky spaces.

  • Letiche Black of Amberth

  • Diana Greenhalgh of My Bespoke Room

  • Charlotte Ford of Cotton Tree Interiors

Play with reflections. This is a classic trick and one that can be invaluable in a tiny room, especially when it’s a well-used living space. “Add mirrors to help expand the space, creating an illusion that the space expands beyond the room,” Letiche Black of Amberth says.

Directing a mirror toward the view beyond the window can increase this effect, adding an airy feel as well as an optical illusion.

Give it a purpose. In many cases the difficulties in decorating a spare room — the room you wouldn’t be sure whether to count as a bedroom or a study if you were selling your home — stem from the ambiguity of the space.

“One challenge clients often face is to know what the room’s function is,” says Charlotte Ford of Cotton Tree Interiors. “They are often unsure of what it should be used for.” It can also be tricky to create sufficient storage and give a dinky space a focal point.

Ford suggests furnishing a guest bedroom with a daybed. “The room can then be used as a private study the rest of the time but still look stylish,” she says. “Your daybed can be dressed up with cushions and pretty throws when it’s not being used.”

URBAN OPERATIONS

Color with care. “Once you know how the space will be used,” Black says, “you can start thinking about colors and whether you will opt for a darker shade for a more intimate feel, or brighter tones for a more open, airy approach.”

If your spare room is blessed with an abundance of natural light, paint it white to boost the airy effect and eliminate any cooped-up feeling. Keeping furniture and decor pared down and using pieces you can see through will add to the free-flowing feel.

But if you’re dealing with a windowless or dark room, it will never look light. White paint in this situation risks appearing gray and dull — so go the other way with a bold, moody or quirky look.

Cotton Tree Interiors

Embrace maximalist decor. “Small spaces make great areas in which to be more creative,” Ford says. “Go overboard with wallpaper and cover all the walls — even have the same design on the curtains.”

Spare rooms are often used as kids’ rooms. This space also shows how nicely bunk beds can boost the usage of space in a small area.

“It’s all about fitting everything you need into a small space without impacting on how you physically move around the room,” says Diana Greenhalgh of My Bespoke Room.

Paul Craig Photography

Focus on the features. “Embrace original features, which will add depth to the space,” Black says. Here, though the fireplace takes up space, it adds visual interest, making this little living room feel substantial rather than appear to be a featureless little box.

Note, too, how effective that large mantelpiece mirror is at seemingly expanding the room’s dimensions. Skipping window treatments, if you can, will also keep a small room feeling more open. If you have good-looking windows such as these, all the more reason to keep them bare.

Lark Architecture

Get on up. Greenhalgh advises using the space in a spare room vertically as well as horizontally. “Keep the larger surface area of the bed near the top of the room so you have more free floor space,” she says.
JADO DECOR PTY LTD

Pimp out your storage. Built-in storage — if you can squeeze it in — is a fantastic way to pack extra space into a tiny bedroom. Adding a wall of mirrored doors takes the humble fitted wardrobe to a whole new level in this small sleep space, exploiting Black’s mirror trick to the max. The black and white striped rug provides another optical illusion, appearing to stretch the floor away from the bed.

Best & Company

Round things out. “Try to understand exactly how you will use the space and design around that, defining each area with real purpose,” Black says. “A round table in a corner works well in a square room. Not only will it fit neatly, it will help to create a better flow within the space.”

Downsize your bed. To make the most of the space, use appropriately sized furniture and try not to overcrowd the room, Ford says. If you can’t comfortably fit a double bed into the room, go smaller.
Cabbages & Roses Ltd

Hang it up. “If there really isn’t space for a wardrobe,” Ford says, “think about using some decorative hooks and lovely fabric hangers, just enough for a guest to hang one or two items.” She also suggests choosing a bed with a base so that suitcases and other bulky items can be hidden beneath it.

Laura Garner

Dig in. When you don’t have the luxury of being able to encroach on the livable space in a room with protruding shelves, why not dig into a wall to create storage niches? Here, architectural interest has been added too, which, as Black has suggested, creates depth in rooms that can otherwise be featureless.

Do get an expert to check out your walls first to see whether they’re suitable, as this won’t work on every type.

Juliette Byrne

Employ the “two’s company” rule. A home study or office can be a fantastic way to make the most of a spare room. But to avoid feeling cramped while you work, Greenhalgh advises, use two full walls but leave the others completely free. “This balances functionality and ergonomics,” she says. “The desk should also be positioned at the small end to create the feel you’re lengthening the space.”

Matteo Bianchi Studio

Create a feature wall. Black explains why carefully positioned wallpaper in a square space is such a clever trick. “It focuses the eye to one particular wall, drawing you into the space and changing how you see the shape of the room,” she says.

Claire Stevens Interior Design

Add depth. Finding the right colors for the walls in a small bedroom can be challenging, as you try to inject depth into the room, Black says. In an otherwise plain room, details such as a striking landscape painting that draws you toward a point in the distance, and structurally interesting shutters, as seen here, can create a sense of depth where there was none.

The challenge of these rooms, Black says, is that “you have to consciously think about every little detail, as the space won’t give any natural clues.”

Malcolm Davis Architecture

Choose clever furniture. Not only should you consider choosing downsized versions of regular furniture to make more of a little room, Greenhalgh says, but you should also seek out furniture that does more than one thing.

This narrow bed is also a desk, a shelf and a bedside perch, and it houses a spare bed as well.”

FACT: The meaning behind “turning the tables on someone" read more..

According the Oxford English Dictionary, if you “turn the tables” on someone, it is generally understood that you have reversed the fortunes in your favor to some capacity, so as to “reverse one’s position relative to someone else, especially by turning a position of disadvantage into one of advantage.” Useful saying, especially for motivational halftime speeches at sporting events, but where does it come from?

Believe it or not, from board games!

Backgammon and similar games belong to a class of board games referred to as “tables,” a general name given to games played on a board with dice. If the game wasn’t going in your favor, you would have to “turn” them, figuratively, if you wanted to win. You can’t actually “turn the tables” in a game of backgammon, although that would be nice. The phrase is a metaphor, a substitute for the common idea of a “comeback,” because you would have to reverse the board/the players’ current positions/situations in order to change the outcome.

While not as directly relevant to the meaning of the phrase in today’s language, there’s also a hint of this phrase, at least in terms of the words themselves, found amongst old-school dinner party procedures. To prevent anyone from being excluded from conversation, the host would choose a direction (typically the right) and speak with the person to that side of him/her. Everyone else was to follow suit, until the host “turned the tables” halfway through the meal, at which point everyone then switched their focus to the person on the opposite side.

Ask a Designer: Coming up with a furniture plan that works

“Sometimes the way to improve a room isn’t to buy new furniture: It’s to rearrange pieces you already own.

Interior designers can spend hours creating the best furniture plan for a room, balancing practical considerations and creative risk-taking.

Changing up the placement of your furniture can make a massive difference. Adding, subtracting or relocating furniture, affects how natural light plays in the space and also how frequently the room gets used. By simply adding a bench to a wall, a room can become more of a hangout. Removing a few pieces to create more space “”can make it feel a bit more casual and informal.

How do professionals map out a furniture plan, choosing the best location for each item?

ANALYZE YOUR SPACE

Begin by deciding how the room will be used. Is it a living room used mainly for TV watching or socializing? Does the space have two roles, such as a home office that doubles as a guest room? Or is it a playroom, where the priority is open space and maximum storage?

In a new home, knowing the answer can take time. It’s important to live in a space for a few weeks or months before assigning it a space plan so that you truly get a sense for how you’ll use it. Then decide on your seating capacity and find a way to maximize it without sacrificing visual balance.

Consider any quirks: Are there lots of windows or doors? Unique architectural items such as a fireplace or beautiful windows with a view? A particular piece of furniture or art that you want visitors to notice?

Depending on the answers, choose one “”standout feature”” and then arrange furniture in a way that highlights it.

Also, lighting can direct a furniture plan. Is there a lot of natural light or will you need plenty of lamps? Are there built-in sconces or a central chandelier?

MEASURE AND DRAW

Even if you’ve got a general plan in mind, measuring the space and creating a scaled drawing with exact measurements of every piece you’re planning to include. Don’t skimp on empty space. always allow a minimum of 18 inches between sofas and coffee tables and 3 to 5 feet for walk spaces. The flow and negative space in a room is as important as the overall function and the furniture”” because it makes the space feel more open, uncluttered and inviting. Consider the size and placement of rugs.  Don’t imagine designing a living-room space with a rug any smaller than an 8-by-10. The rug is meant to unify the entire space and connect furniture pieces together, so a good rule of thumb is that at least the front legs of any sofas or chairs in the living room should be on the rug. For a larger area rug, allow at least 18 inches from the edge of the rug to the wall.

In very large rooms or loft spaces, rugs can help define small areas and make the space feel organized.

To keep everything balanced while visually separating each zone, use area rugs in coordinating colors with slightly different textures and patterns.

KNOW THE RULES, THEN CONSIDER BREAKING THEM

Some rules are important, leave at least 36 inches of open space between the back of a dining chair and a nearby sideboard to allow for proper traffic flow. But plenty of other rules can be broken or modernized.

it’s not ideal to enter a living room and be staring at the back of a sofa. But if you flank the back of the sofa with a console table and lamps, it instantly becomes more inviting and less closed off. Also, while some symmetry is important to ground a furniture plan, mixing in a little asymmetry makes for a much more interesting room.

flanking a sofa with matching end tables and table lamps, may balance the grouping with mismatched chairs and a standing lamp. Remember, you don’t have to place furniture along walls. Floating furniture in the middle of the room helps highlight architectural features and also aids in proper movement throughout the space. Placing furniture away from the walls also works well in spaces that have lots of doors, or soaring windows that shouldn’t be obstructed.

And not every living room needs a sofa. trying an unusual layout, like a living room with four lounge chairs around a center coffee table instead of the expected sofa. Use unexpected pieces, like a library table stacked with books in a wide hallway, or two area rugs instead of one to define spaces within a bedroom. And remember: You’re not obligated to use everything you’ve got. Curate and edit down your existing pieces keeping the items that work well and selling the items that don’t.

The Pain-Free Furniture Checklist

“Many sofas and chairs can be surprisingly bad for your musculoskeletal health. But if you follow a few simple guidelines, you can find furniture that gives you the right amount of support and cushioning, just like a good pair of running shoes.

• Choose firm. Look for sofas and chairs with a foam-density rating of at least 2.4, or those with hand-tied coil springs. If you sink into the pillow abyss when you sit down, keep shopping.

• Make sure your seating holds you in an upright position, vertically aligning your ears over your shoulders over your hips.

• When you rest against the back support, your feet should be flat on the floor, with your knees at a 90- to 110-degree angle to your hips.

• There should be some space between the edge of the seat and the backs of your bent knees when you’re sitting, so there’s no pressure on the veins and arteries there.

• Try before you buy. Sit in a chair or sofa for at least 20 minutes, so you can see how it feels.

• Be sure to take into account what you’ll be using the seating for most often. Activities like reading, watching television, knitting, playing video games and talking have different ergonomic requirements.

"How Does Memory Foam Work? "

“It’s soft, conforming and exquisitely comfortable, but how does Memory Foam actually work?

Also called visco-elastic foam, memory foam is made mainly of polyurethane, which is also used in different mediums such as foam seating, insulation panels, seals & gaskets, Spandex fibres, and hard plastic parts of electronic instruments.

Memory foam reacts and responds to changes in temperature and pressure. The foam realigns, softening where heated pressure is applied (for example, body heat), and since memory foam is an insulating material, it makes localized temperature increases possible. When laying down, the mattress will react more to points of higher pressure, like the shoulders and hips, thereby distributing a person’s weight evenly and aligning the spine.

There are three main components in the making of a memory foam mattress that work together to make memory foam the great product that it is: open cell structure, firmness, and density.

Open Cell Structure – Foam cell structures can range from open to almost close cell. The tighter (or more closed) the cell structure, the less air there is that flows through. The polyurethane in memory foam uses an open cell structure, meaning that each foam cell contains pores which trap air in a solid state. This cell structure allows better airflow, less odor after opening from vacuum packaging, and better decompression over a longer period of time. When the open cells are compressed (for example, by laying down on the mattress), air is spread throughout, and displaced among adjoining cells in the mattress.

Firmness – The firmness in memory foam is measured using IFD (Indentation Force Deflection). The IFD is determined by the amount of weight it takes to compress the foam by 65%. More weight used equals a higher IFD score. When measuring the IFD, one has to take the density of the mattress into consideration, as the higher the density, the more firm the mattress will be, and therefore it will need more weight to compress by 65%.

Density – The density of a memory foam mattress directly determines its reaction to heat and pressure. Measured in lbs/ft3, memory foam mattress density typically ranges from 3-6 lbs/ft3. The higher the density, the more firm the mattress. With a firmer mattress, it will take more weight to make an impression, and the mattress life is overall longer than that of a less dense mattress.

Typically it is recommended to purchase a higher density memory foam mattress (5 lbs/ft3 or higher), as the lower density foams can be too soft, not supporting proper alignment of the spine. Also, higher density foams have a longer “memory”, and will return to their original shape more slowly than lower density mattresses.

How to Choose a Pillow

“We spend 1/3 of our life sleeping on average, so having a comfortable, quality pillow is imperative to get a good night’s rest. Choosing the right pillow depends on your preferences but with so many choices, you may feel overwhelmed. We’ve taken the guess work out of selecting the pillow that’s right for you. Here are a few important factors to consider.

SLEEPING POSITION – The way you sleep will determine the firmness of your pillow.

Pillows for Back Sleepers Back sleepers prefer a medium support pillow that cradles the natural curvature of the upper spine, and achieves the perfect position for your head and neck.

Pillows for Side Sleepers Side sleepers prefer a firm or super-firm pillow that contours and cradles the head, neck and shoulders, providing an even sleeping surface to help keep the body in a horizontal line.

Pillows for Stomach Sleepers Stomach sleepers do best with a soft, plump pillow that cushions the head and neck at a comfortable angle and prevents an unnatural turning to either side.

Generally those who don’t maintain a particular position through the night prefer a medium density pillow to accommodate all positions.

FILL TYPE

Down Pillows Down is the most luxurious of all fills and is Mother Nature’s warmest, lightest and most efficient insulator. Down has superior loft, fill power and breathability. Down is the light, fluffy insulating undercoat clustered beneath the feathers of geese and ducks which protect them from severe winter temperatures. Why is down ideal for pillows? Down conforms wonderfully to your head and neck. It holds up better than synthetic fills.

Down/Feather Mix Fill refers to the actual feathers on geese and ducks. Feather pillows are often firmer which provide excellent support. The more down in the mix the loftier the pillow. Down/feather mixes tend to be more economical than all down pillows.

Down Alternative Pillows Down alternative fill is made of synthetic or natural fibers which mimic the lofting and warmth of down, without allergy worries. We offer two types: Primaloft® Deluxe and TCS® Down Free™.

Synthetic Fill is man-made, usually polyester. Like down-alternative, synthetic pillows are hypoallergenic making them ideal for allergy sufferers. However, they have a shorter life span and do not conform to the head and neck as well as down, feather or down-alternative fill.

Memory Foam Pillows Memory Foam is a dense, temperature-sensitive sponge-like material which molds or contours to your body heat and weight. It is best for sleepers who prefer a firm pillow, and have neck and spine issues.

FILL POWER

Fill power is the measurement used to explain the quality and insulating value of down, as all down is not equal. The higher the fill power, the better the down, meaning the down will loft more, insulate better and provide greater warmth and comfort. A good quality down will usually have a fill power of at least 500. Below that level, the fill may contain a lot of feathers or small, damaged down clusters.

COVER

The most luxurious pillows have a quality fabric cover with a high thread count. Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Higher thread count covers (230 or more) will be softer, silkier and more durable, and, most of all, keep the fill from getting out and impurities from getting in. Some pillow covers are also treated with fabric protection that makes them stain- and water-repellent as well as anti-bacterial and anti-microbial.

SIZE

There are 4 basic pillow sizes:

Standard Pillow, 20″” x 26″”. Put one standard pillow on a Twin bed, two across a Full or Queen bed, and three across a King bed. Uses a standard pillowcase.

Queen Pillow, 20″” x 30″”. Perfectly paired across the top of a Full or Queen bed. Uses a standard pillowcase.

King Pillow, 20″” x 36″”. Extra long and ideal in pairs across the top of King beds. Uses a King pillowcase.

Euro Pillow, 26″” x 26″”. This large, square pillow is a great backdrop for a bedding ensemble and a good cushion for sitting up in bed. Uses a Euro sham.”
