Modern Furniture Apartment Style Tips

“Modern apartment life is no longer only available to those in high-fashion magazines. Modern furniture is everywhere today, and with a bit of planning and creativity, you have the ability to style any space with elegant, classy, sleek furniture and designs.

Choose a Color Scheme Ahead of Time

When working with smaller spaces including apartments, choose a color scheme with one to three colors. Stick with whites, off-whites, beiges, browns, and other neutral colors when attempting to broaden the appearance of any room or space in you apartment. Many modern color schemes include black and white in addition to another color, such as red, green, or navy blue.

Leave “White Space” on Your Walls

In modern design, “white space” is often referred to when working to develop websites and applications. However, it is also commonly mentioned when designing modern spaces in small areas. Although bright and original artwork is an ideal way to create a unique atmosphere in your apartment, be sure to leave enough space between paintings and photos to ensure you maximize how large the room appears altogether.

Types of Modern Furniture

Modern furniture often includes hard and defined edges with clean and sleek looks. Smooth, curved, and futuristic furniture styles are also just as common depending on your own preferences and personal choice when decorating. Gloss and matte looks are both popular with modern furniture.

Square and symmetrical furniture is desired when creating modern room atmospheres and templates. Linen, jute, cotton, wool, and silk are all popular types of fabrics used with modern furniture today. Many modern pieces of furniture include black and white colors, neutral designs, and even retro or patterned designs to bring any space to life.

Bookshelves and Storage

Creating your own storage units and implementing shelving is also highly advisable any time you are living in an apartment, regardless of its size. Adding shelves into closets, on bedroom walls and even in small nooks adds more space to reduce clutter on tables and floors throughout your place.”

Tips for decorating your apartment for Thanksgiving

”

How can you decorate for Thanksgiving if you live in an apartment?

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends, but sometimes people living in a bland apartment, especially if they are limited on space, find it difficult to get into the holiday spirit. Apartment living shouldn’t inhibit your holiday mood, however you may need to get a little creative, have a plan, and simplify.

How can you make your apartment festive?

Start by bringing in traditions from your childhood. If your home growing up always had pumpkins on the front porch, put a couple pumpkins outside your front door. If budget is an issue for your holiday decorating consider purchasing mini-pumpkins (usually under a dollar) and set a few on your kitchen table.

Use Nature for inexpensive fall decorations

Thanksgiving and fall decorations are perfect for displaying fall harvest beauties. You can use leaves, branches, vines, corn husks, nuts, corn, etc. Vines make great decorations for apartment-dwellers simply because they do not require much space. Transform your Thanksgiving vine decorations for the Christmas season by simply adding some lights to your display.

Bigger is not always better

When decorating your apartment, it’s always important to remember bigger is not always better. A huge inflatable turkey is probably not the best choice. Don’t use items that are so large they will make living in your space difficult. Use alternative spaces for your holiday apartment decorating, such as hanging items on your walls, your front door, even your ceiling.

Add smells of the season to your apartment

Adding the smells of the season can set a mood that will have you in the holiday spirit in no time. You can cook holiday favorites that fill your apartment home with the aromas of the season. No time to cook, no problem. Change out your candle for an apple pie or pumpkin scented one. Whatever smell makes it feel like Thanksgiving to you.

Atlantic Bedding hopes you can make your apartment living space an enjoyable home for the holiday season by filling  it with the colors, traditions, and smells that make Thanksgiving meaningful to you.

Top Neutral Colors to Choose Now

There is a new trend making an appearance on the interior design horizon—stylish new shades of neutral. It’s akin to the fall fashion runways, where there is always a new, hot color trend—think, white is the new black.

Homeowners and interior designers alike have hopped whole-heartedly onto the neutral color bandwagon, realizing that there is nothing negative about decorating with neutral colors.

We are not talking about boring beige, rather the new neutrals are bright, welcoming and go with any style of decor. As the Behr paint company aptly points out…neutral colors are livable, flexible and classic. While this article will focus on two very popular neutral colors, it is important to know that every color can be a neutral. Yes, every color has a shade in the color spectrum that, when used properly, can become a beautiful neutral backdrop.

Let’s look at some of the A-list neutrals that seem to be topping this trend and how to use them in your home.

Grey is Taking on a Bright New Horizon

At first, we may think of the color grey as a stormy, dark, dreary grey day—this is not the kind of decor we want in our homes! Rather, the new grey that is showing up everywhere is modern, clean and actually seems to lighten-up a room, like the sky clears after a storm.

Grey has become the new go-to neutral that every designer wants to experiment with. Here is the problem— grey can be a difficult color to choose. As some of you may have already discovered, choosing the wrong shade of grey can result in a dreary, dark room.

In order to choose the perfect shade of grey you need to consider many factors such as natural lighting, furnishings and trim. Read below to find out how to pick the perfect shade of grey and make it work in your home.

Grey Mixed With White Trim

There is nothing better than grey walls mingled with fresh white trim, and white paneling. If you feel that grey will be too stark for your home, than this is the style you should aim for.

If your walls have panelling or wainscoting from the floor up to the chair-rail, then consider painting the bottom panelling a bright white and opting for a deep grey tone on the walls above. The result— a warm, welcoming style that looks subtly modern.

If you prefer a more contemporary style, then consider covering all the walls with grey paint and then accenting it with broad white trim and moldings. Either way, grey and white mix together in a magnificent manner!

How to Choose From the Many Shades of Grey

As we mentioned above, it can be tricky to choose the proper grey for your home. There are a lot of variables to take into consideration in order to pick the perfect paint.

Obviously, it is always smart to paint some large samples on your walls, observing the color over a couple days to see how it looks in different lighting and different times of day. You want to choose a shade that brings brightness to your home; one that makes the darkest room come alive.

Anna Moseley of Ask Anna, says that many people find the grey that looked perfect in the store ends up looking blue or purple once on the wall. Moseley notes that the trick to finding the perfect grey color is to look for a grey that has a tan base, it may even appear tan at first, but when you get it on the wall, you have the perfect grey!

The New Green

We are not talking about a dark, hunter green mixed with that awful deep burgundy that we all saw in the 80’s, or the lime green that was so popular in the 70’s. The new green trend that has everyone ‘green with envy’ is soft, and adds a pop of unexpected color—yet manages to remain neutral.

This new neutral green goes with every decor from shabby chic to modern minimalist. The new green comes in many shades—it can appear as a cool, green-grey tone or more of a blue-green that hints toward a warmer, more turquoise appearance. The blue-green shade is best used in traditional, country or shabby chic interiors, while the cooler grey-green is best for modern interiors.

Like the grey color trend, this new green is also a tricky color to choose and use properly. The last thing we want are sewer-green walls or hospital-green walls. Let’s look a little further into how to choose the perfect green for your home.trendy-green-paint

We Don’t Want Hospital-Green On Our Walls

Shades of green have always been popular because they are a color found in nature—and nature never picks the wrong shade. Greens can be calming or energizing, depending on their shade.

However, green is a hard color to choose, and none of us want to feel like we are living in a hospital ward. In order to avoid the cold appearance, we suggest you avoid using green in north-facing rooms, or opt for a green with a warmer yellow undertone in these rooms.

Green can also be livened-up by adding room accents in brightly colored hues such as red and yellow. As with grey, green also looks great with bold white trim and molding. It is very hard to know what is right unless you paint some swatches on your walls. The rooms lighting, flooring, and furniture all affect how a color will look in the home.

As you can see, you can never go wrong with neutral colors—they are a classic! Green and grey are both hot neutral colors right now, but they are both also hard colors to get right.

Go ahead and paint some swatches on your walls and live with them for a few days, observing how the color changes throughout the day. Ultimately choose the neutral shade that opens up your space, allowing your furnishings and the rest of your decor to come alive.

11 Fresh Bedroom Trends in 2014

Here we present 11 different bedroom trends which will be popular in 2014; trend or not, the bedroom is a personal sanctuary which needs to be designed in a way which inspires you; for you.

  1. Floral Wall Art

Extravegant and flamboyant floral wall art is fresh. There is something refreshing about the beauty of natural flowers (without wanting to sound too flowery). If you are a person who appreciates the intricacies and facinations of living world, a large wall painting or print could add that inspirational edge which your bedroom has lacked. Our personal preference is a professionally hand painted piece, however this comes at a price. Large prints are an acceptable alternative; so long as what you choose give you an extra bounce in your spirit when you look at it.

The beautiful dandelion example below, to me, speaks something about me and my life. It is more than a nice looking picture; and this is what to aim for within this trend, which will be a popular one for 2014.

  1. Gray, Soft Blacks and off Whites

Look for off blacks, grays and whites, all rolling back into each other like the greens of a forest fold back into each green. Take a visit to any of the interior design or trade fairs this year and you’ll see this color palette prevalent amongst vendors. Popular amongst vendors means in demand from customers, which means this will be one of the trends of 2014.

  1. Hotel Influence

Some will loathe this one, but hotel style bedrooms are edging their foot through the door of home bedroom design. Look for large roomy beds, extravagant, yet universal headboards, bringing in the practical elements such as bedside lighting, table and chairs and large windows to let in a lot of natural light.

Look for luxurious hotel designs and not cheap tacky motel style rooms. Lighting is one of the most important factors in affecting the mood of people, and that’s where the soft mood lighting of hotel rooms work. Add some plants and greenery to add an extra warm homely inviting atmosphere.

  1. Traditional

While it’s an old trend, it is still, and will continue to be popular. It’s a very safe option if you plan not to change the decor of the room for generations as it doesn’t have a time stamp on it. Think of the interior design trends of the 60’s and 70’s, they went out of fashion and aged which requires an remodeling at some point. A room like the one below is timeless. The room will have to be touched up to keep it fresh but the general underlying design of the room remains. The arm chair and foot rest, pillows and even the drape around the bottom of the bed are floral, which is a massive trend in 2014, therefore, even a room which is traditional could be accessorized with fixtures and fittings which are in vogue, so long as they complement the principles of the room.

  1. Radiant Orchid

Rich and vibrant with life; just like the name suggests, radiant orchid is Pantone’s color choice for 2014. This palette is not for everybody, but as aforementioned, if this color energizes you, go for it as it’ll not only please your emotional heart strings, it’ll also please your mental faculties knowing you’re on the cutting edge of the latest interior design trends. Look to color walls, lampshades, floral art, rugs, patterned cushion, pillow, bed covering and upholstery covering and to finish off, add a ravishing live orchid as the cherry on the cake.

  1. Dash of Danish

Danish beds are in for 2014. This style of bed has been growing in popularity over the past year and is seen to continue in its trend. The low, clean and clinical beds ooze of sophistication. The bed is the center piece of the bedroom, it’s the biggest piece of furniture that draws the eye, therefore it’s important that you find one which suits the design of the room and one which catches the eye. Danish beds do just this. Complement the Danish bed with an uncluttered, bright, organized room for maximum effect.

  1. Moroccan Accents

We’ve seen a rise in ethnic prints over the past few years, but this trend is more specific: Moroccan. Morocco, placed up in the north west of Africa has penetrated the design world with its unique patterns and designs. Look for Moroccan patterns on canvas prints, puffs, curtains, sheers, bed and upholstery coverings. There are all additions to a room which are easy to implement yet strikingly powerful in their impact, offering maximum effect for time invested. This isn’t going to be a trend for everybody, but it’ll be noticeable and seen throughout 2014.

moroccan

  1. Natural Materials

Natural tones, wood features, metals, stone & brick. These are all in for 2014. Use natural tongue and groove wooden panels, brick or brick veneer for walls (like the photo above). Use natural materials as features in the room such as the room below, where Murphy Code have used chunky thick planks of wood, showcasing the natural grooves and curves, which jumps out from the bed as a feature on the wall behind, weaved around well place sconce lighting: Loving it. It’s a trend which will be seen throughout the entire house in 2014, and the bedroom won’t miss out on this one.

natural1

  1. Rustic

Rustic, natural and rugged. As with the cool soft design from Australia below, this is about using country materials and colors. Natural accessories such as the branches (Silver Birch or painted white?) in the photo below, adds a real rustic feel to the room. Similar to the point above, but edging more towards a house in the country as opposed to a city apartment. That raw, natural, rustic feel to a room will be a solid trend through 2014 and beyond.rustic

  1. Tartan

Where possible, combining more than one popular trend within the same room is a winning idea. Combining a natural, rustic design with another tartan is what has been implemented in the design below. Tartan is a pattern which comes in and out of fashion, which is making a come back in 2014. An easy to implement trend as tartan is usually used on soft furnishings, pillows, bed coverings and curtains. They’re easy to implement yet stark in impact.

tartan

  1. Beautiful Blues

Last but definitely not least, this is one of the strongest trends across multiple vertical interior design markets as well as other industries: Blue, blue blue. It’s difficult to go wrong with the blue either, as most of them are in this year. Soft pastel sky blues, navy, brilliant blue to electric turquoise; they’re all in vogue and what’s wonderful is they work well together. As with the design below from Plum Interiors, the variety of blue in contrast to a fresh crisp white give the room a happy upbeat feel; an ideal start for the perfect day one might say. As in the example below: Walls, backboard, lamp stand, pillows, cushions, flowers, bed and drapes, it’s a versatile color which is easy to use in every way.
